Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend  Next Entry
Goodbye-goodbye.
The amount of time I spend procrastinating by checking and rechecking my friends list is appaling. I'm removing everyone from it. I will probably continue to check a few journals, but I'd highly recommend you call or email me if you want to talk to me.

This is almost definitely not permanent, but right now I need a radical change in my work habits, and simple self-discipline has not been enough so far. Since I don't write in livejournal anymore, I no longer have to worry about the fact that deleting my friends list makes it impossible for me to keep a friends-only journal. If you'd like copies of any of my old posts, I'd be happy to provide them -- just let me know.

I'll miss your posts, but I definitely understand why you're doing this. I hope it lets you focus better!

Well, I'm sorry to hear you're done here, at least for now, if not more permanently. I've always thoroughly enjoyed your entries; more thought-provoking than most LJ entries I read. I've also really appreciated your comments on my journal over the years. It'd be great if you could drop a line from time to time, but I understand how busy you are.

Thanks for all the thoughts you've shared; best of luck in the future.

It's not even that I'm that busy. I just spend an extraordinary, ridiculous, disgusting amount of time on the internet.

I have that problem too but I'm not ready to quit cold turkey. good luck with it, though.

the thing with me is, if I turn of my internet and hide my DVDs, I will still sit here and organize the folders on my laptop for hours and hours. I figure I'm going to have to learn the self-discipline becuase NOTHING else works.

Hahaha, yeah, I'm the same way. I'm not saying that self-discipline isn't necessary -- I'm saying it's not sufficient. I figure that if I discipline myself AND keep the major temptations away, I might manage to get things done in a timely way.

I knew what you meant.
I'm saying: I've gotten rid of the distractions and I STILL can't get work done. I just find something else to distract myself with. If I have nothing else, I'll just sit there and bite my nails.

anyway, good luck.

indeed, keep in touch. i kind of wish you weren't removing all the friends though, cos i know there are some posts i'd like to go back and read -- i just don't know WHICH.

and, while i'd love to email/call/im/whatever, here is the truth: i am far too intimidated to do so. lj is easy to hide behind. i do hope to talk to you though.

If you're too intimidated to call or email me, obviously I'll have to call or email you! :)

Regarding my old posts: you're now the one person on my friends list. Go and download whatever posts of mine you want. But hurry, because this offer lasts for a limited time only!

Anyone else reading this: I'll do the same for you if you want. Just let me know.

Joanne again:

Usually when I do that, I just unplug my laptop entirely and like, "hide" the network cable or something (out of sight, out of mind). At home it's hard though 'cause of wireless. When the internet is around, I always manage to find something to do.

Ooh! That's funny -- I was just thinking about Red Sneakers last week, and wondering if you'd updated, and then I went to take a look and realized that you probably weren't going to want to work on that particular storyline anytime soon. So I'm glad you've done this!

Obviously I'll have to read it without going through a friends list with over NINETY people on it.

Heh, fair enough. I figured it was worth a shot to say so, though. I really do appreciate your comments on LJ more than anything else, since they're both thoughtful and plentiful (when it comes to posts that really matter, anyway).

If you write a post that you particularly want me to see, send me an email about it. Or, even if you don't, I'll probably see it eventually anyway -- I'm still checking a number of individual journals periodically, which I've found takes enough active effort that I can't use it to mindlessly put off going to sleep the way I often do with a large friends list.

oh, i meant to respond to your comment from the music not as expression post a while ago and forgot until clearing out emails just now. i completely agree with you that music doesn't have to have an "aboutness," and that experiencing music not-as-expression is not an unemotional experience. often people add representation to music to better understand it or relate to it or possibly add another dimension to the listening, (i do it all the time.. i play beethoven and hear people arguing and see images and colors, but it's just what my mind naturally does, i can't say that the piece is about those images and ideas). music definitely doesn't need representation to have emotional power, which is what you were saying. i think i was just understanding the idea of working with materials outside you differently than what you meant by it.. actually i was understanding it in terms of certain kinds of visual art, the experience of which can't necessarily be carried over to music, so we were talking about different things. also, cerebral wasn't the right word, which i knew as i was using it, but couldn't think of how else to explain. i probably meant un-emotional, but that doesn't apply here.
g’luck, and hope the journal returns!

I just now had an urge to read this old post you wrote about composers in the WWII era and how they reacted to whether or not they were banned by Hitler... I can't remember which composers did what.

maybe next weekend? this has been more difficult than it seems it should be, but it's taken a lot of deliberation and planning for me to see many people lately, so ;)

i dunno!

please email me directly at heartgut@gmail.com or... oh man, phone number! well, email me and the phone number thing will probably be a better idea through that exchange.

p.s. i hope you go for walks! it's nice to take advantage of global warming by taking walks. but i mean it.

I just realized I never answered this! I was going to tell you about it on the phone, but I forgot. That phrase comes from a letter to the video game company Beth is working at -- if I remember correctly, someone was saying that some game was not violent enough to merit some particular rating, and at the end of his formally-written, normally punctuated letter, he added that sentence, in all caps. I thought it was so amazing that I had to NAME MYSELF AFTER IT.
